He didn't view himself as a hero at all. He was a modest man.

That doesn't change the fact that he most definitely WAS an American hero.

I view the moon program as a collaborative effort between America and Wernher von Braun. The rest of the world had nothing to do with it.

'I don't think that Neil viewed himself as an American hero'

The way I remember it, the space race was all about the US getting to the moon before the Soviet Union. The Apollo 11 crew had a ticker-tape parade, an honor reserved for American heros.

But, I was just a teenager at the time, what do I know?
