Joe Biden in 1991: The FBI "Does Not Make Recommendations" for the Supreme Court

Twenty-seven years ago, Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) explained why today's Democratic demands that the FBI investigate the sexual assault accusations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh are utterly wrong-headed. It is not the FBI's job to determine whether or not Brett Kavanaugh should serve on the Supreme Court.
But don't listen to me, listen to Joe Biden.
"The next person who refers to an FBI report as being worth anything, obviously doesn't understand anything," Biden said in remarks dredged up by NTK Network. "FBI explicitly does not in this or any other case reach a conclusion. Period. Period."
"The reason why we cannot rely on the FBI report - you wouldn't like it if we did. Because it is inconclusive," the then-senator added. "They say, 'He said, she said, and they say.' Period. So when people wave an FBI report before you, they do not, they do not, they do not, reach conclusions."
More specifically, "They do not make recommendations."
Biden was addressing the FBI report about sexual assault allegations against then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. Joe Biden argued that the FBI's report is not conclusive on these issues, so the Senate has to do the work to determine whether or not to confirm Supreme Court nominees.
Last week, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) made exactly this point in a letter to the lawyers representing Christine Blasey Ford, the first woman to accuse Kavanaugh of sexual assault.
While two women have come forward with accusations against Kavanaugh, all of their named eyewitnesses denied any knowledge of the alleged assault or the events they were allegedly connected to.
Democrats have called for an FBI investigation as a stall tactic. They have denounced the Senate Judiciary Committee's ongoing investigation as partisan - while refusing to take part in that investigation, despite Grassley inviting them to do so. ...
