An update: I left at 5:45am(EDT) Tuesday morning from Adrian, MI (about 75 miles West of Detroit) and stopped for the night in Tulsa, OK at about 7:40pm (CDT). I drove 848 miles in 13 hours and 18 minuets (that was the actual amount of time that I was behind the wheel). I averaged 63.9 mph and got 25.9 mpg (I'm driving my GMC SUV). Had about two hours of heavy rain between Springfield, MO and Tulsa. It finally cleared-up about 50 miles inside of Oklahoma.
I left Tulsa, OK, this morning at 5:45am(CDT) made it to Gallup, NM, at 6:43pm (MDT). I drove only 799 miles today in 12 hours (time behind the wheel). My overall average speed did go up a bit to 65.7 mph (speed limit in Oklahoma was 70 mph while it's 75 in Texas and New Mexico) which of course drove my average mpg down to 25.6. I'm only about 639 miles from home, so I should get in sometime in the late Thursday afternoon. The weather looks good and barring any traffic issues, I shouldn't have any problems meeting that schedule.
So far, and I'm talking about the entire trip, which at the moment totals 4,778 miles, I've only seen the evidence of TWO accidents. The first was on the trip out in the evening (it was already dark), and it was where a semi, in the other lane, had crashed and burned blocking the entire freeway somewhere near St. Lewis, MO, where there are no service roads. Not sure what the truck was carrying but it smelled like burning garbage. It appears that the fire had just been extinguished as there was still a lot of smoke and steam surrounding the crash site. The back-up must have been at least 10 miles. Today I say a crash in Oklahoma, again in the other lane, this time during the day, that must have just happen as the firetrucks and ambulances had not yet arrived (I saw them a few minutes down the road). The back-up was only about a mile long, but the highway was completely blocked and again, it looked like there was a fire, only this time it was a car not an 18-wheeler.
Anyway, I'll post a final update tomorrow after I arrive home.
