Yeah.
Seems a lot of folks make the reservations . . .
then cancel later. In 2012 I could not get reservations.
Then I was able to get Phantom Ranch, but not the North Rim. So I drove around and visited the North
Rim. Had breakfast there, and ran into a lady who
had made no reservations . . . but she just kept calling
and, often enough, somebody would cancel and she was
able to get a reservation.

In 1986 and 1988 I hiked across the Canyon. Not hard
getting the reservations back then. I hiked from the
North Rim to Phantom . . spent the night . . then
hiked on to the South Rim. Easier that way - the North
Rim is higher than the South, and the trail from the
North is longer.

It was still a grudge match crawling back out.

(Do I need to dig out the trail map and list the mileages?

Oh, yeah . . looks like North Rim to Phantom is going
to be about 14 miles. The first few are very steep.
The last bunch are closer to flat.

P.S. Late September . . I needed a hat and a warm
sweatshirt up on the North Rim. Once I finished the
worst of the vertical going down, it was time to change
into shorts and a T-shirt.
Zim.

My last post focused on your drive. I also have some thoughts about the hike.

If they want to spend the night at the bottom they will need reservations at Phantom Ranch. These reservations are hard to get and must be made a year in advance. Check into when reservations open and try to get in right away. In an hour or two they are filled up. I have tried once or twice and have never gotten in.

When a person takes a mountain hike, they are usually hiking up when they are fresh and downhill when they are tired. Hiking in the Canyon, the last part is uphill.

All the best to them,

nacl
