I hiked the Grand Canyon three times.
In 19986 and 1988 I hiked from the North Rim to the
South Rim - two days each time.

In 2012 I didn't get enough reservations, and hiked
from the South Rim to Phantom Ranch, then back out
to the South Rim. (Again, two days.)

While having breakfast in the mess hall in 2012, the
guy was talking about how hiking across the Canyon
was almost a 'religious experience'. I believe he
was right.

He also talked about the 'iron men' who cross the
Canyon in one day. Some running all the way across.
And how they miss the Canyon itself. Perhaps I misremember . .
But for me hiking across . . drinking in the splendor
of the scenery . . natures awesomeness . .
I just can't see how racing across it can meet any of
those spiritual needs.

I thoroughly enjoyed all three trips. Being over 60 now,
if time and circumstance permit I would not mind
going again.

Zim.
