Perhaps the final step.
We went to the moon, by a president who was assassinated. Everything broke loose after that. It took a while, because the momentum he created was unbelievable and truly PATRIOTIC. That America will NEVER COME BACK! It was built and run by the huddled masses looking for freedom and a future that looked bright. And they could.
Then, we had all the crap that happened in that vacuum, the Vietnam, debacle, the assassinations of his brother and MLK, then Nixon, and down from there, the first budget deficits and market crash under Reagan, and down we've gone from there, even after Clinton straightened things out economically, but the country was already broken and divided. It was over. So called "patriots" with their own version of patriotism have destroyed this country.
The scientists and thoughtful Americans who propelled us to the top of the world are now being discounted about everything they say or try to do. They are now the "elites" who are vilified for ....thinking.
Never discount the effects of political violence. It shreds the fabric of society.
There are no huddled masses today. There are factions fighting for their own crumbs. All the geezers forgot who they came from, and what they were doing in the 60s. They are now bitter old coots filled with hatred they always had in them, but never thought they could vent in that society. Now they can, and they have poisoned many younger people with it.
We are broken now.
There is a sign of hope that the American spirit still lives, but it has been held by the throat by hatred and ignorance, and absolutism. It is our only hope, because there is nothing else there that would promote anything good.
I'd be very surprised, unless there is a miracle. And those don't happen often.
