By law, mutual funds have to distribute earnings from capital gains and
dividends. And the end of 2018 (according to my 401K) the payouts were
bigger than 'normal'. Also, to raise the money to make the payouts, the
mutal funds have to sell assets.
So, if the mutual funds sold stuff, slightly depressing the prices, could
the algo's have mis-interpreted what was going on and triggered off sell
orders . . feeding into other algo's and peoples limit orders . . .
Causing an auto-nomic sell off causing prices to drop more?
If indeed that is all that happened . . . once 'They' realize what happened
I would imagine share prices would 'bounce back'.
