Democrats "feel" (because "thinking" would usually prove them wrong) that they were dealt an unfair hand and that government is a sword that exists to even out the injustice.

Ironically, this is something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. If a person doesn't think he can prosper, he most likely won't.

Democrats are also wrong about government. It's not there to help and it usually does not.
