Of course they do. But that doesn't give them a waiver when it comes to accountability.

Let's suppose that somebody committed a burglary when he was 19 years old. 40 years later, he's a changed man and regrets what he did. He would never rob anyone today. One day, he sees somebody from the family he robbed. They're old and gray and very prosperous. As best he can tell, they had a great life. Does the passage of time or the change in who he is in any way absolve him of a responsibility to pay them back? Absolutely not. We are accountable for what we've done.

As I said earlier, the willingness to accept that responsibility is a reflection of one's level of maturity and integrity.
