I'm a bit surprised that the trim can be set to "dive". "Descend," yes. But "dive"?

I tend to agree with you, but the design does have to take a lot of variables into account. Weight and balance, Wide variation in airspeed. Certainly others.

That said, they may need to restrict travel on the trim system. But first they have to figure out why the pilots have to wrestle with the plane in the first place.

That explanation makes sense. Thank you! I'm a bit surprised that the trim can be set to "dive". "Descend," yes. But "dive"? That sounds a bit extreme. In fact, I'd think that if the updrafts were so great that they had to be countered with a "dive" that control of the plane would be returned automatically to the pilot. But I'm no plane designer and I don't know what pilots might actually need. Or maybe that is how it works but it malfunctioned.
