I always thought that Smollett's "trying to get a pay increase" motive was pretty hokey. But "trying to get a FRIEND into the White House"? Far more plausible, imo. And it would explain the strings that someone with enormous clout has obviously pulled to secure his release.

Needless to say, no Presidential candidate would have benefited more from the Jussie Smollet attack, had it been believed, than Kamala Harris.

Kim Foxx, the Cook County State’s Attorney, tried to convince Chicago police to turn the Jussie Smollett case over to the FBI, Chicago newspapers reported. Her action came after a conversation with Michelle Obama’s former chief of staff and with a Smollett relative who has not been named.
