Tijuana is experiencing record violence. Asylum-seekers forced to wait there fear for their lives.
Hundreds of asylum-seekers are stuck in Mexico while waiting for their court dates in the U.S., living for months in Tijuana and other border towns where they feel unsafe because of drug crime and violence targeting migrants. When they finally get to see a judge, some of these asylum-seekers make an emotional appeal to be allowed to stay in the U.S., but they are often returned to Mexico under a Trump administration policy rolled out earlier this year.
“It feels like they are cutting off your life, the hope of continuing to live,” said R.T., 31, an asylum-seeker from Guatemala who said he fears for his life in Tijuana.
