But what was explained to me is that there are two kinds of wells: Ordinary wells, in which you go down 50 feet or so and strike water, and Artesian wells, which might go down 500 feet or more. Artesian wells draw in a little bit of water every few feet, so they have to be very deep in order to get the yield a homeowner needs.

Artesian wells have the problem with the sulfur smell - but usually only if the property has been vacant for a while. In that case, run the water for 15 minutes and the smell will dissipate. Use the water every day and there's no odor.

I'm lucky, by the way. I have an ordinary well. The guy right across the street is uphill just a little and has the other kind... with the sulfur problem, too. Bad break for him, but there's no telling how deep your well needs to be until you start drilling...

Fortunately, nothing bad is in my water. (And it tastes great!)

Great MIne out on the island was safe but a really bad sulfur smell and taste. I had to put 2 BIG BLUE carbon filters they are called. Spendy on the filters. I put a switch valve when I was watering the lawn and such, I would bypass the filters........
