If it's like the Great Depression, the early symptoms were that tons of businesses had their loans called by banks and tons of others were unable to collect from their customers . . . and cash was in very short supply. Goods on shelves stuck around for a while, not being reliably resupplied but it hardly mattered since nobody had money. Looting didn't happen so far as I know because it took a while for folks to assimilate what had happened and grasp the magnitude of the problem. The ones who panicked early were the elites who'd been heavily into the market ON MARGIN and found themselves going overnight from wealthy to bankrupt.

But you're probably right. If the economy has a sudden collapse, there'll most likely be looting. There was in Venezuela and it's a pretty good model for what might happen here.

Try this scenario: Suppose that a collapse were to occur this October. By the end of the month, store shelves get emptied, never to be replenished.

...I think ya are wrong there decomp. When there is the threat of an ice storm or a hurricane all the local store shelves are emptied in a matter of days or hours if you have looting and in a disaster there will be looting. I have seen "looted" stores that didn't have anything at all on any shelves. Nothing, Nada! They take everything they need or want and then take the rest of it hoping to be able to trade it for something they need or want. People who are unprepared don't mind killing to take care of their last minute desires.
