Re: "The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. "
#4 was very easy. Carter, Obama, Einstein, Curie, Curie, Fleming, Higgs, Heisenberg, Schrodinger, Begin, Arafat, Watson & Crick, Planck, Bohr, Friedman, Krugman. Ironically, Gary Trudeau won a Pulitzer for his comic strip Doonesbury! (Peanuts was not so fortunate.) I'll admit that I couldn't do Schultz's other challenges.

Schultz was wrong to lump Nobel and Pulitzer prize winners in with all of these others. The accomplishments by the winners of those two prizes, in MOST cases, have an ongoing impact on our lives and we SHOULD know their names. It's sad that so many of us don't.

You'll notice that Charles Schultz didn't ask us to name five saints (because, being a very religious man, he could have easily done that) or five Presidents (because we all could.) His challenges mostly involved naming people who had a single, inconsequential achievement. I think it's sad that he lumped the world's greatest intellectual and business achievers in with tournament and beauty pageant winners, as if they are in any way comparable ... but that tells you something about Charles Schultz.

I read a biography of Charles Schultz some years ago and found it both interesting and entertaining. It was facinating the way Schultz channeled the turmoil from his marriages into the characters and events in the comic strip. The parallels were STRONG. Lucy was clearly modeled after his wife and, even though he denied it, Charlie Brown (and a little of Linus) was Charles Schultz himself. Lucy was abrasive, loud, abusive, ambitious, spiteful and domineering. Schultz divorced wife #1 around 1970 and remarried, this time to a woman who was kinder and . . . boring. If you followed the Peanuts comic strip, you saw Lucy undergo a transformation at the same time, which was unfortunate for fans of the strip. The new Lucy was much less entertaining than the old and the strip lacked the groundbusting zing and creativity it had in the '60s. Wife #1 may have been a bitch, but no one ever called her dull.

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the questions. Just read the e-mail straight through, and you'll get the point.

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the questions. Just read the e-mail straight through, and you'll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of Miss America.

4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.

6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners .

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.

4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.

5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with .

Easier?

The lesson:

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care .

I care. xx
