Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's ex-chief of staff is under federal investigation over whether he engaged in campaign finance misdeeds.
Saikat Chakrabarti, who was the mastermind behind Ocasio-Cortez's 2018 campaign, abruptly departed from the congresswoman's team on Friday as the freshman representative continues to cause a rift in the caucus.
'People were not happy that he used his Twitter account to comment about members and the bills that he and his boss oppose,' a senior House Democratic staffer said, according to the New York Post. 'There was a series of colliding and cascading grievances.'
Chakrabarti also assisted in steering Ocasio-Cortez's divisive Green New Deal.
Federal investigators are now looking into two different Political Action Committees, Brand New Congress and Justice Democrats, which were both set up by Chakrabarti to support progressive candidates.
According to a March complaint filed to the Federal Election Commission, both PACS funneled more than $1 million in political donations to two private companies controlled by Chakrabarti.
PACs must follow federal disclosure rules of the spending and fundraising practices, but private companies do not have to comply to the same type of transparency.
Between 2016-2017, the PACs raised about $3.3 million and transferred a third of the money to two private companies with names similar to the PACs – likely to go around the transparency rules.
