My wife and I hit the garage sale circuit this morning and didn't finish until 3pm. The best story of the day is probably from the last sale.

Around 1 p.m., I saw some solar yard lamps at a sale and asked how much they were. The guy said he had to call his sister since they were hers. He got her on the phone and it was immediately clear that she hadn't given it any thought. She eventually said "$20?" I said "No." She said "Then how much?" I said "$10." She said "No," and that was that. After the call ended, the guy said he would have sold them to me. Then he said, "But how about this snow blower for $50?" I looked at it and said "Wow." It was a VERY lightly used Craftsman 24" blower that had to have been about $700 new. I asked him to start it up, which he did, then I said "Okay. I'll take it."

I had no room in the van, so I gave him a $20 deposit and we departed for home. On the way home, I told my wife what a bargain it was. "I'd have expected it to be selling for $500, not $50!" We got home, switched to the truck and returned about 90 minutes later (it was pretty far). This time, the sister was present. She immediately said, "We have to figure out what to do . . . because the snowblower is $500, not $50!" LOL. No, after all that, I didn't buy it. %@#$! If I'd had space in the minivan, that baby would have been ours! So close.

The deals of the day, though, include an unused (packing straps still seal the box) Hansgrohe Logis Loop, Single-Hole Lavatory Faucet , selling on Amazon right now for $115.

It's a little fancy for the barn, but for just $10 I'm not going to quibble.

Then there was a 10 gallon / 125 psi Jobsmart air compressor. The guy was asking $75 and said he'd only used it twice. I bought it for $60. I think it's this one that's selling at Tractor Supply for $145.

Finally, we went to a sale that had two antique scythes. They both had first rate wooden handles but one was missing its blade. The other's blade was in outstanding condition... sharp and looking almost new. I asked for the price and the guy said $5. LOL. I was all over that! I'd been to a garage sale earlier this year that had one - not as good - selling for $50, so I knew it was a deal. I didn't try to bargain him down any further. I took it and began to leave, but the guy said, "Hold on, you'll need this..." He handed me a box and said "This goes with the second one." It was a blade. So, for that same $5, he sold me two antique scythes in fantastic condition. Online, I see a set of four on etsy.com that are similar but selling for $650 . I'll bet that the two we bought today are in better condition than any of them. Another website has about twenty and said the average price was $37.50.

Finally, when the sales were done, we stopped at a thrift store we'd never been to (in a town called Troy). My wife found four hubcaps for $10 that she was pretty sure would fit the minivan. And they do. Our hubcaps are pretty battered after 215,000 miles, so this was a terrific find.

So... we got some deals today but narrowly missed out on that Craftsman snow blower. *sigh* .

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
