Just from my faulty memory, ribit, but I believe Hong Kong was actually leased by the Chinese to the British back in the late, late 1800s. That lease ended after 99 or 100 years. So, I suspect Hong Kong is very much a part of China. Of course, once the people of Hong Kong acclimated to the ways of Western Civilization over such a long period of time, it is an extremely difficult and volatile transition to Communist rule.
Taiwan is a whole different matter. I don't give a rat's ass what the Chicoms say - Taiwan is its own f@#king country - period, end of story.
