That is why there are multiple actual tsters that deal with NOTHING but automobiles and are the reason all manufacturers want the coveted title of Motor Trend car of the year award.

CR is great for consumer items because this is what they spcialize in. Like Sewing machines, appliances of all types, washers and dryers, televisions, stereos, etc.

Yes, they do have an anual book that comes out with their ratings of used cars. My wife subscribes to them so we get annually. We check it for the BIG appliance opinions.

But when it comes to cars, we go to the CAR authorities which are Edmunds, Car and Driver, Road and Track, Motor Trend, KBB.

But, as I said, if you personally know a vehicle you have had great success and track record with, that should tell
you what to expect from them.

I just think CR is great for other things but there are IMO better sources for overall car reviews than them.

For example, almost ALL of the automotive reviewers I lsted show a Hyundai Tuscon being anywhere from number 6 to number 3 rated in their lists of compact SUV's, and the Santa Fe at number 2 aND 3 IN MID SIZE IN MOST OF THEM. So they are pretty consistent in their car builds.

Just my opinion and what that opinion is based on. Its all good.

I looked at the top rated compact SUV aready in person. MAZDA CX-5. Nice car. Not as much options and niceties as the Hyundai and I cannot get a powered passenger seat either. So, they have lost any interest I might have had in them. A Tuscon Limited or SEL Plus trim BOTH have 8 way power passenger seat as standard.

Makes a difference when you have certain items that are must haves and far less money to get what you want..

I believe YOU made a good choice for your wants and needs. But really, all that matters is that MRS. DE is happy and its a bonus if you are too. LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know how that works very well.

Anyway, it will be al ittle while yet before I am ready to pull the trigger.

BEST time to buy a new car is when the lots are trying to get rid of this years inventory like in December.....

Amazing what happens to the sale price off the sticker then.... lol!!! Thumbs Up

Re: "1. I hate consumer reports. They are almost always wrong."
Now, be fair. Consumer Reports is like the weather bureau - wrong more often than it ought to be but a whole lot better than nothing. I do care what it has to say.

As I suggested the other day, Consumer Reports is better about reporting problems than reporting strengths - perhaps because problems are often objective (it failed the crash test) defects while strengths may be subjective (it had very responsive handling).

I value CR's overall opinion of complex merchandise. It's like the weather bureau. If the weather bureau predicts heavy snow, it might be wrong about the snow but will at least be right about the day being cloudy. I might want to reschedule my picnic.

I figure that Consumer Reports' fine details might be wrong.... perhaps a car should be #5, not #1, or should be #14 not #20. But CR's opinions are usually in the ballpark. If they say a car model is terrible, I'll steer clear of it.

In any case, CR is just one tool of which a plethora exist. As with any significant purchase, no single datum should decide the matter.
