Thanks for the warning.

Though, truthfully, when I buy I typically buy butter.

Historically, has there ever been a food jingle more successful than Blue Bonnet's ("♪ ♫ ♩ Everything's better, with Blue Bonnet On It") and Imperial's ("Da-da-da-da - Fit For a King!")?? These two companies had to have spent fortunes over the decades building up their brand recognition. They'd surely take great pride in their respective products.

Since I was raised on margarine and had good memories of it even though I haven't had any in MANY years... I recently decided to pick some up. Imperial is what the store had, so that's what I bought.

I made a big batch of popcorn, melted down a stick of margarine, put it on, gave it a try and . . . puh-tooey! It was awful! Tasted kind of bitter, and no butter flavor at all.

I grabbed the package the margarine had come in to see what they'd done to it and saw that it wasn't margarine at all. It's called Imperial "spread." I hit the internet and found that, by law, margarine must have 80% vegetable oil. Imperial is 53% vegetable oil. (The rest is pure petroleum bi-product, is my guess.)

My next trip to the supermarket, I checked on Blue Bonnet. SAME THING. 53% vegetable oil, and they too call it "spread." I did find a package of margarine, though, and I'm giving it a try this evening on a new batch of popcorn. Yeah... that's more like it. IMO, it's better on popcorn than butter is.

I have to wonder about the brainiacs at Blue Bonnet and Imperial, though. As far as I'm concerned, they ruined both their product and their company image. I'll never buy either one again.
