De

a suggestion for the new constructed places and water lines.

Wrap those lines if copper, with HEAT TAPE that you can plug into an outlet. That stuff carries a little tiny current that does not allow pipes to freeze. Other altrenative is to go to harware store and purchase PIPE insulation which is round same diameter of pipe, and put on the pipes. This will also help keep them from freezing.

We had a power outage at midnight that had me concerned. I really don't know what options there'd be if there were ever a LENGTHY outage during winter. Sure, I've got wood with which to stay warm, but how do I keep the pipes from bursting? (The new house and barn will have generator hookups.)

Fortunately, power came back on overnight.
