Good suggestions! The heat tape, though - it sounds like it requires power. My whole concern is about what to do if we lose power... say for a week. That's definitely a possibility on the new, very isolated property. Temps here sometimes hover around 0° for that long so pipes will freeze even if they're insulated.

At the new house, I'll have generator hookups. Unless I also run out of gas, I should be able to keep the water running. As I'm sure most on this board know, a dripping faucet doesn't freeze.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

a suggestion for the new constructed places and water lines.

Wrap those lines if copper, with HEAT TAPE that you can plug into an outlet. That stuff carries a little tiny current that does not allow pipes to freeze. Other altrenative is to go to harware store and purchase PIPE insulation which is round same diameter of pipe, and put on the pipes. This will also help keep them from freezing.
