It's true that the CDC director said that (two years ago). He was wrong... big time wrong.

Below, I have the embarrassed explanation from the CDC website. It's current, not a wild-assed guess from 2 years ago. But even the CURRENT figure is a guess since hospitals don't actually test most flu patients, even in death. That's why their guess is always in round thousands instead of an actual number.

Also, the flu is usually Influenza A and Influenza B, TWO viruses. That's what's being compared by the article's author to the single virus SARS-CoV-2.
