The AR-15 will hit further out than 100 yards, of course, but the 5.56mm is pretty anemic at distance in transferring ft./lbs. of energy to the target. That is why I prefer the AR-10 (7.62mm x 51 military or .308 commercial). It has all the good handling characteristics in close, but from zero to 500 yards, it hits hard.

My hunting rifle is a Winchester pre-64 Model 70 in .270 Winchester with a 3x9 scope. The .270 is a .30-06 casing necked down to accept the slightly smaller bullet. It is super fast and very flat out to range with a good punch, but it is easy on the shoulder. Personally, I would like to get another bolt-action in .338 Lapua Magnum, which is a lot harder on the shoulder, but will handle much large animals at farther range.

Ten thousand rounds per gun is a lot, micro. That is a significant investment, and you'll have to give some thought as to where you want to store it.

Thanks Sir Wizard !

I want a long range accurate rifle and Ribs has pointed ou the Sniper Rfle was patterned or based off the 700 using a havier caliber for accuracy over distance...

I belive that possibly the AR and the 700 would be great to have each as they serve different purposes...

I'm thinking ten thousand rounds each...

If the proverbial **** hits the fan I do not want to be caught undersupplied or under powered...

Thank you so much!
