Re: "It was the instrument cluster went bad . they heat and contract a lot and some of the solider connects would lose contact."
I much appreciate the advice. Thanks! I don't see myself solding joints or otherwise repairing a van that's 600 miles away, so I'll have to hope the problem is limited to the battery. Otherwise, into the shop it goes, and I'm already leery of the mechanics in that town. The wife says the van is behaving better with the new battery, but it might just be because the battery is currently charged. We're not in the clear yet. I suggested she put some miles on it to see if the battery drains, but now I'll also suggest she purchase a voltmeter. That'd be the quicker and more reliable test. As for cleaning the leads, when she was in Wal-mart, I told her to pick up a wire brush for that purpose. Hopefully she did. She's driving back to NH on Sunday or Monday, so she'll have to get all that done soon.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

I fixed 2 subarus like that, It was the instrument cluster went bad . they heat and contract a lot and some of the solider connects would lose contact... and when I took them out you could see burn/ hot spots where the connections went bad. A couple I fixed just by re heating the solider, Its called wetting the joint again...and they made contact again

and as far as the battery just put a volt meter on the battery and rev it up. It should be showing 14.5 and up on the volts going to the battery when running. If it does chances are its time for a new battery
