A German amateur soccer team, SG Ripdorf, lost 37-0 on Sunday after having just 7 players on the field throughout the match. The team had feared contracting Covid-19 after their opponents, SV Holdenstedt II, had played against a team with an infected player the week prior.
Though the Holdenstedt II squad had all tested negative, the Ripdorf players did not want to play until after the 14-day incubation period was over. "We tried to postpone the match…but Holdenstedt wanted to play." Ripdorf co-chair Patrick Ristow told ESPN.
The team was able to field seven players (the minimum required) to avoid a €200 fine for abandoning the match.
Ristow told ESPN about their social distancing game strategy:
When the game kicked off, one of our players passed the ball to the opponent and our team walked to the sidelines. Holdenstedt scored, but the referee booked our captain for unsportsmanlike conduct… for the rest of the match our players returned to the field but they only stood on the pitch."
My main question is this: How in the world did the other team only score 37 goals? I mean, I would have been doing some more hardcore stat-padding if it were me.
