Solar panels and batteries - if your electrical
'essential needs' can be kept small.

A generator that can burn methane along with a
'digester' to convert sewage into methane might
be another solution.

You might also look at 'backyard windmill generators'
but this site said this.

A small wind generator that you might put in a backyard might have a capacity of about one kilowatt. An average annual wind speed of nine mph would produce more than 200 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, and average wind speeds of 14 mph could produce more than 600 kilowatt hours per year. That sounds good until you realize that the average household in the United States uses about 10,000 kilowatt-hours per year.

So, no easy solutions.

Re: “I love the idea of using an externl wood burning heat system for your house.. You have plent of free fuel to help keep you warm.”
It'd be hard to survive off the grid in an ice cold house and without hot water. This boiler helps, but it still requires electricity to pump the water. Not all that much . . . I could give it all that needs with a small generator. I'll need a bigger generator for the house. And they'll require gas - which I'd still need to buy. *sigh* Getting 'off the grid' ain't easy.
