Re: “Wow! You have a higher threshhold for pain tolerance than me..”
Probably not. In early December, I'd had a kidney stone. The E.R. gave me repeated doses of morphine. The morphine gave me a horrible bout of constipation. It was nightmarish... and while I won't go into the details, I did tell everyone involved in my surgery that I didn't want any narcotics. No exaggeration: I don't know if I'd have survived if I'd had to deal with both problems at the same time.

They gave me fentanyl anyway while I was in I.C.U., but not very much and also a good amount of laxative.

Two days after surgery, I heard a guy in the room next to me groaning and crying. He was severely stopped up and bleeding. The nurses were trying to help but didn't know what to do. One offered to use her hand to try to empty him out manually. He turned her down and I don't know what happened with him. I did, however, approach the nurse and tell her she should get the poor guy a fleet enema. (It's a tube of glycerin.) I thought it was peculiar that I had to tell her since the problem is clearly very common after surgery, but she didn't seem to know and was appreciative. I believe that's what they did.

Fleet enemas are available at Walgreens. You guys should keep them in mind in case you ever have a problem like that yourselves.

So that's the story of me, my dislike of narcotics, and my supposed pain tolerance. It's really not that I'm pain tolerant, but that narcotics scare the crap out of me. Uh, or they don't ... as the case may be.
