Just saw a segment on msnbc, interviews with Alberta prime minister, and Oglala Lakota leader in S. Dakota.
No issue is cut and dry.
The Lakotas don’t want it through their ancestral lands, but when he was asked what he thinks about alternative energy tech he was all for it. My immediate question would be “how about putting wind turbines and solar farms on your lands? If not why not, and where should they go instead?
Tar sands suck, they are like scraping a barrel, the process is destructive to water tables and the environment. Otoh, even Obama had agreed that there is a lower carbon footprint through the pipeline instead of having the same oil transported by trucks.
In a few words: unless the right questions are asked and answers received and evaluated, treating it as a strictly political issue doesn’t get us anywhere, and we end up with more carbon pollution.
Unity cannot be achieved by serving political agendas, right or left. It is a self defeating process. Biden must understand that and deal with it. Now, I am not saying I know/understand all the issues involved, but these are the major ones, and by not asking the right questions and dealing with reality, we maintain division and FUD.
We want to accommodate the Indian Nations, but this is the 21st Century, dudes. Would you allow turbines on your lands or they would be disrupting your ....ceremonies? How will you participate in pollution control? Helping out. Do you think the air is cleaner where you live and your climate conditions will stay the same for you while they deteriorate around you? You want to take the gas for your trucks, but you want it processed elsewhere? What gives? Peace pipe time, dudes.
