It's why black people sometimes get concerned and take immediate precautionary measures when they encounter black males on the street. They are "prejudiced" in the sense that they know, statistically speaking, they are more likely to be attacked by a black male than any other person. It's simply a fact.

But a revelation I've had in the last few years is that being a "racist" isn't a big deal. It goes hand in hand with being "prejudiced" in that EVERYONE is. This includes every human who isn't comatose or terminally stupid. We're ALL prejudiced - and, to the extent to which race is a condition we're even aware of, we're all racist.

Prejudice is a survival trait. It's a "we versus them" attitude that helps us to get by. Anyone who claims that it doesn't exist in them and affect their behavior is a liar.

Once we recognize that prejudice is a universal and essential human condition, not something horribly aberrant, the media's efforts to manipulate the population with its "do this or you're a racist!" message has considerably less impact. That's a good thing.
