Virginia legislature votes to abolish the death penalty. A vote on legalized marijuana is expected later Friday.

The vote by the House of Delegates makes it nearly certain that Virginia will become the first Southern state to abolish the death penalty. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) has said he will sign the legislation when it reaches his desk. Later Friday, the House and Senate are slated to legalize recreational marijuana in the state, which would also be a first in the South.
