Re: “He hasn't heard back from any of the other six colleges he applied to”University of Texas at Austin just sent Joey his first rejection letter. And the chair of UC San Diego's Dept of Computer Science and Engineering sent him the following:
Some of Joey's friends at school who also applied to Ph.D. programs are beginning to get depressed. Joey's roommate, for instance, who Joey calls "The best math undergrad in the entire school" has now been rejected by six of the seventeen schools he applied to. (Joey only applied to seven.) I know the roommate and feel for him. It must be incredibly difficult.

One thing that's becoming clear is that it's harder to pursue a Ph.D. in math than in Computer Science. There just aren't that many openings in math. A second is that Joey is stronger than he's led me to believe. He's always been one for downplaying how good he is. I think people like him more because of it.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

No, HUGE news - in my family!

Joey has just been accepted for a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison! His education will be tuition-free for the next four years. Further... and as part of the offer... he will work as a T.A. for one of the professors at a salary of $22,000 per year.

He hasn't heard back from any of the other six colleges he applied to, but University of Wisconsin is one of the two he was calling his "#1 choice," the other being Carnegie Mellon, the only school that would likely keep Joey from accepting this offer.

We're incredibly happy tonight.
