BREAKING: Senate agrees to hold votes on witnesses in Trump impeachment trial
The U.S. Senate voted 55 to 45 to allow witnesses to be considered in the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, a decision that will likely extend the trial after it appeared headed to a quick end on Sunday.
The Senate vote allows debate on which witnesses could be called and what rules might apply to the process. The request was a surprise by House Democratic impeachment managers, who had previously said they believed they made their case without the use of witnesses. Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., the lead impeachment manager, told the Senate he wanted to hear testimony and see notes from Republican Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, of Washington, who voted to impeach Trump after a discussion with House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy about his attempts to get Trump to call off the mob on Jan. 6.
