Re: “UC San Diego”Joey received his formal acceptance from U.C. San Diego yesterday, with the school's official offer: Free tuition + $27,000. Unlike Wisconsin's offer, no work is involved. Awesome, right? Naw, there's a catch - a big one. UCSD's offer is for just one year. Thereafter, something else would need to be negotiated.

I know better than to tell my son what to do. He'll figure out for himself that Wisconsin's offer is far superior to UCSD's. He has to work for the $22,000 Wisconsin will pay him each year, but it's teaching, which he enjoys and finds de-stressing.

Of the seven applications Joey submitted, he's had 2 offers, 1 rejection. 4 are still pending. I've told Joey that my hunch is that they'll be rejections. I think that the schools that really want a student likely let that student know quickly. The others hold off on saying anything, effectively putting the applicant on 'wait' lists. As we saw in 2017, being on a wait list doesn't usually work out. We'll see, though. That's only my WAG.

Joey's roommate and best friend (who I call the math genius) has been accepted for a 1-year Masters degree in England. He's going to take it, deferring Arizona's Ph.D. offer. Several of his applications are still pending, so Arizona's not locked in. I have a feeling that he'll be in greater demand from other schools next year when he has a Masters degree from Cambridge in tow.

Those two have proven to be an impressive pair, and they've helped each other tremendously. In a way it's a shame that they're going separate directions.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
