Re: “STAR TREK DISCOVERY is really good. I mean really, really, really good. It's the best of the various series”I was perhaps six episodes into the 14-episode first season when I wrote that. By episode 9, the quality had fallen massively. At this point - Season 2, episode 12 - I'm finding every episode a struggle to watch.

Star Trek Discovery turned into the slowest, queerest, preachiest, most teary-eyed show I think I've ever seen. It is the antithesis of the original Star Trek, which was patriotic, optimistic and FUN. I don't recall ever seeing Captain Kirk cry. The main character in 'Discovery' never smiles and seems to only rarely have dry eyes.

What a shame. The show continues to be visually stunning, but that's just not enough. The show is a BORE.

For those who enjoy science fiction, STAR TREK DISCOVERY is really good. I mean really, really, really good. It's the best of the various series even though I haven't bonded with the characters the way I did with the original Star Trek cast.

What makes it so great? First, truly spectacular special effects. THE EXPANSE, on Amazon Prime, wowed me, but STAR TREK DISCOVERY... or STD as I prefer to call it... leaves THE EXPANSE in the dust.

Second, the plots are high quality, not for the faint of brain. There's none of this silly "Q is here to save the day!" nonsense. STD has complex, usually violent story lines that run from episode to episode in a quickly evolving galaxy.

The story takes place ten years before Kirk and is initially focused on the Federation/Klingon war. There are a few characters (but no actors) you'll know. The cast is new. On the down side, there's a ridiculous amount of gratuitous homosexual activity. You might as well get used to it or just throw out your TV. It's not going to go away.

STD is available from CBS ALL ACCESS. If you have the time to binge watch, sign up for a free week and see if you can watch all 3 seasons in that time. Otherwise, shell out the six bucks for a months' access and watch it at a more leisurely pace.
