Moderna and my friend Mark

My closest friend, Mark, is about 75. We worked together for several years in Virginia. During that time, perhaps around 2010, he abruptly went blind in his left eye. He'd had a stroke in the optic nerve and the blindness was irreversible.

Mark told me that it was a genetic vulnerability. His father had gone blind too - but the father was in his mid-90s when it happened. Mark's greatest fear was that his right eye could go too.

I've been having e-mail and Zoom discussions with Mark and three of his friends since December. The vaccines have been a significant topic. The other friends are all Mark's age and seriously considering it. One has already had both of his shots. I, of course, have been telling them that I think the mRNA shots are dangerous. Nick seems to agree with me. Mark did too, but made a calculated guess that he only has seven or eight good years left and should get the vaccine "rather than blow another 12 percent of [his] remaining time cooped up at home." On February 20th, he posted "I just came back from getting my first Moderna Covid vaccine shot. I can see a third eye forming already. But, maybe I'll have two 'good eyes' again." He's always been able to make light of his misfortune.

On February 26th, he posted "I'm currently at Jefferson University hospital for my right eye - Wills Eye (not good). I'll explain later."

Wills Eye is a hospital in Philadelphia.

We didn't hear from Mark again for three days. That's a long time. We've been chatting every day.

On Monday, March 1st, his buddy Nick posted:

In response to a response I posted about being happy that he was okay, Mark said:

"No, I might not be okay. My condition is very serious. This might not improve, and it could easily get worse. It's my optic nerve, no small worry. We're just trying to remain positive. I'll keep in touch."

And that brings you up to date on my friend Mark. Was it just chance that his right eye began failing within one week of receiving the first Moderna shot? Maybe. Maybe not. The only thing I'm sure of is that it's a mighty strange coincidence.

A final note. This evening, I called my brother and told him the story. My brother relayed that his friend Marguerite had her second Moderna shot a few weeks ago. The next day, she passed out and was taken to the hospital. She had severe vertigo. Doctors think she had some kind of infection . . . but they still aren't sure about it. Another coincidence? How many of these coincidences are happening???
