I agree with you about 'series.'

Until 2019, nearly all of my SF books came from yard sales where, often, what was for sale was an incomplete series, usually not beginning with the first book. I didn't buy 'em. Nine times out of ten they were fantasy anyway, so I didn't care. I don't know what it is about fantasy, but it seems that any time an author writes a decent book, he or she follows it up with another five.

I suppose that everyone's hoping to be the next Tolkien. The thing to remember about Tolkien, though, is that his three LOTR books tell just one tale. A really big tale. Thus, he can be forgiven for releasing them as three novels. Modern series seem to throw a bunch of loosely connected plots into the same universe, sometimes with the same protagonist. The authors can continue churning out the books in perpetuity, the way J. K. Rowling could have with the Harry Potter series except that she apparently got bored with it. You have to admit, her books/movies are like sitcom episodes. It doesn't much matter if you miss one.

Dune, by Frank Herbert, was meant to be 3 books. Last I heard, there were FOURTEEN of them, most not even written by him since he died in 1986. Yeah, series suck.

But if a series DOES interest you and you want to get in from the beginning, consider abebooks.com. It's a great source for cheap used books.

Sorry.
I never heard of the 'Retief' series till just now.
And then I learned to dislike series books . . .

A couple of months ago now I unloaded the last series
I used to own . . . but I have irritating memories of
having to wait for the next book to come out . . .

David Weber has at least two series . . . Honor
Harrington is one of them . . . I like the writing.

At least the Bolo stories are 'stand alone'.

I think the reason I dislike series is because it feels
like there is so much I needed to know from before,
and that I HAVE to get the next one to see what happens
next.

But thanks for remembering.
Zim.
