Amazon Union Election: 'No' Votes Outnumber 'Yes' Votes At End Of 1st Day Of Counting

April 8, 20217:30 PM ET
ALINA SELYUKH

The hand counting of votes will continue on Friday in a high-profile, high-stakes election that will determine whether Amazon workers in Alabama will form the company's first unionized warehouse in the U.S.

At the end of Thursday, more than two-thirds of the tallied votes were against unionizing, with no votes outnumbering yes votes 1,100 to 463.

A total of 3,215 ballots had been cast by Amazon workers on whether they wanted to join the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. That's about 55% of all the workers at the warehouse in Bessemer, Ala., who were eligible to vote.

Hundreds of ballots have been challenged mostly by Amazon, according to the union. That means they aren't included in the current tally, but may play a big role if the result is close enough for those ballots to sway the outcome. The legal process for the National Labor Relations Board to decide whether to count the contested ballots could take weeks.

Public vote counting starts for Amazon union drive in Alabama
The vote could be labor organizers’ biggest win in decades

By Josh Dzieza and Adi Robertson Apr 8, 2021, 3:47pm EDT

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has begun publicly tallying votes for a proposed Amazon workers’ union in Alabama, which would be the first of its kind nationwide. The count, conducted over Zoom, may not include all potentially eligible ballots, but it will offer an early look at the results.

The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) announced yesterday that 3,215 ballots were received from the roughly 5,800 workers at BHM1, a fulfillment center located in Bessemer, Alabama.

Amazon workers at Bessemer cast their ballots by mail in February and March, and the official counting process began on March 30th. Representatives can challenge individual workers’ eligibility to vote, and those ballots won’t be counted during this tally — but they could be deemed eligible later and potentially affect the election’s outcome.
