I think you can all sleep beter now about your son's future and I believe the possibility of getting a solid education . It helps if you know somebody at a strange place and it seems the school went above and beyond to make Joey feel welcome and that they really wanted him to be part of their program..

Take a deeo breath now dad. Let it out slowly.. You guys have a lot to be thankful for and proud of.. Ya done good !

Joey just accepted UC San Diego's offer and turned down Wisconsin's.

I'm not happy with Wisconsin. It was initially Joey's preferred school. It was our preferred school. It made the superior offer. But, having made the offer, it made no effort to get him to accept.

San Diego bent over backward to make it clear that they really wanted him. They told him who his faculty adviser would be. The adviser spent significant time telling him about the school's program and what options he'd have once he was there. They pointed out neat things at the school. They directed him toward students who had interests similar to his. They had other students talk to him about the community and how things worked at UCSD. They even sent him $40 since, had the school not been locked down, they would have invited him to the campus and taken him out to lunch.

Joey had no assurance that he'd be happy at Wisconsin, but he's quite sure he will be in San Diego. I told him that if it were me, I'd have made the same choice. But, wow. Am I ever disappointed with Wisconsin. What a stupid reason to lose a student that they supposedly wanted.

Meanwhile, Joey's roommate has accepted the Masters Degree offer from Cambridge in England, AND deferred the Ph.D. offer from . . . UC San Diego. Funny how that worked out. The decision means that in a year, the two of them will likely be roommates again. I'm cool with that. They're good friends and have been hugely successful so far in their academic pursuits. They've helped each other get through the last four years and I think make good collaborators.
