My guess on giving everyone a universal minimum income

is that it wouldn't do as much damage as its opponents fear to employment levels, so long as the universal minimum doesn't exceed the level required for basic survival. That would mean that jobs would exist not so much for survival but in order for employees to thrive.

I suspect a universal minimum income will put scorched earth employers out of business. If you aren't seen to offer an opportunity, people will opt out and look for something new. Only employers who create constructive environments will succeed.

One major problem with western economies now is that getting a new job is hard so people stick with what they have even when they are unhappy. It would be an interesting world in which employees weren't so dependent, could spend a bit of time creating their own businesses, and so on.

I suspect when these sorts of structural problems are solved (and universal minimum income is still an experimental idea which might or might not work as some hope), people will look back on the way we do jobs now and see it a bit like we see feudalism. As a structural form of dependency that makes people less free and less happy than they might otherwise be.
