Sturgeon, the Scottish SNP leader, is pretending her independence demand is now justified. But it isn't. Nothing much changed.

We had that once in a generation vote a few years ago. Boris will say no to another one without a clear margin of victory for the Scottish Nationalists.

And of course, they don't wish for independence. They wish to be part of the EU. They aren't nationalist in any sense. They wish to feel powerful in a large organisation of which they will be a tiny part.

At any rate, I might be open to a double referendum:

The first, for all the people of the United Kingdom, whether they wish to have a united security and foreign policy, with a royal family in common. We share the same islands and I hope we will rule out the possibility of posting any but our own military in UK territory. That isn't a regional decision. It's a collective one for everyone in the UK.

The second, for each of the UK's domestic parts, whether they wish to cooperate internally or to operate as independent units without regional subsidies and suchlike. If the Scots wish to be socialists and to join foreign trading groups, so be it. That's up to them. The English will probably be grateful not to pay for a substantial portion of their bills any longer and the Scots can help subsidise French farmers through the EU if they wish.

Scottish National Party wins but not with an overall majority of seats or voters. Same as before.
