2,000-year-old skeleton on doomed Vesuvius rescue mission in ancient remains identified as senior Roman soldier

A 2,000-year-old skeleton belonged to a senior Roman soldier who was likely sent on a rescue mission to the doomed towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum as Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79, scientists have discovered. The skeleton was once thought to be that of a regular soldier, but archaeologists say several clues set it apart.
