No reason to gather all that unless he may potentially use it dor something later... PLus the wood needs to dry out which is why he brought it inside. I get the sorting by types of wood. Some is better than others.
BTW, you said he is from Wisconsin.. What's a rebel doing being buds with a yank from Wisconsin? The Iron Brigade I believe was a Wisconsin unit. Toughest bunch of Hombre's in the war. Everyone on both sides knew who they were and nobody wanted face them... I believe they got their daily ration of cheese from home.... lol!!!
