...the Wisconscinite lived down here and he was a freak of nature. His fingers were so big they had their own liver. Big old square head. Definitely some neandrathal blood coursing thru his veins.

No reason to gather all that unless he may potentially use it dor something later... PLus the wood needs to dry out which is why he brought it inside. I get the sorting by types of wood. Some is better than others.

BTW, you said he is from Wisconsin.. What's a rebel doing being buds with a yank from Wisconsin? The Iron Brigade I believe was a Wisconsin unit. Toughest bunch of Hombre's in the war. Everyone on both sides knew who they were and nobody wanted face them... I believe they got their daily ration of cheese from home.... lol!!!
