Now . . .
Seems to me that every time I been stopped by the police,
it was because I had indeed been doing something wrong.
Last time, several years ago now, it had been for speeding.

Not too long ago there was a big hoop-to-do about this
black army officer who got stopped and pepper sprayed.
In my local area.

And for most of my adult life I have been regaled with
stories about the 'speed traps' in said local area.
And speed traps do not discriminate.

The local paper was making a big stink about how the
dude had been 'stopped for driving while black' and
what an atrocity had taken place.

In the letters to the editor, someone who had apparently
seen the police body cam footage pointed out that the
police man had asked the dude to step out of the
vehicle, and he refused to do so. Which is why he got
pepper sprayed.

Now. We have traffic laws - it is against the law to speed.
Reckless driving is against the law. Running a red light
is against the law. And the police job is to enforce those
laws. And why do we have those laws? To try and make it
safe for everybody to drive along said roads.

I really do not think the police are out to abuse people.
Black or otherwise. I do believe they are out to enforce
the laws and keep everybody safe.

I do know the media and black people will lie.

But, in this day and age with everybody having a cell phone
video camera and many police wearing those 'body cams' if
the police man does 'misbehave' the odds of him being
caught at it are pretty good.

So, if a black dude is really worried about being
'stopped for driving while black' he should get his
own body-cam and automatically upload it to the cloud.

And I'd laugh good and long if his own footage showed
him trying to abuse the cop and he got jailed for it.

Zim.

Authored by John W. Whitehead & Nisha Whitehead via The Rutherford Institute,

“The Fourth Amendment was designed to stand between us and arbitrary governmental authority. For all practical purposes, that shield has been shattered, leaving our liberty and personal integrity subject to the whim of every cop on the beat, trooper on the highway and jail official. The framers would be appalled.”

- Herman Schwartz, The Nation

We’ve all been there before.

You’re driving along and you see a pair of flashing blue lights in your rearview mirror. Whether or not you’ve done anything wrong, you get a sinking feeling in your stomach.

You’ve read enough news stories, seen enough headlines, and lived in the American police state long enough to be anxious about any encounter with a cop that takes place on the side of the road.

For better or worse, from the moment you’re pulled over, you’re at the mercy of law enforcement officers who have almost absolute discretion to decide who is a threat, what constitutes resistance, and how harshly they can deal with the citizens they were appointed to “serve and protect.”
