Rest in Peace
Ray Donovan
1930 – 2021

It is with profound sadness and the deepest admiration that the Trustees of Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club announce the passing of their father, Ray Donovan, on June 2. We have all lost a great and good man.

Ray helped co-found Fiddler’s Elbow in 1965 and was instrumental to the initial growth of the club. He loved the game of golf and all it represented for him; honest competition, camaraderie, and enjoyment. He was immensely proud of the Fiddler’s Elbow staff and members, some of whom had the good fortune to hear his many stories, some of which may have been embellished. We are humbled that he saw the changes in our club during the past decade and are grateful he was able to witness the transformation.

A private funeral will be held on June 8th followed by a repast reception at Fiddler’s Elbow at 12:30pm that day. All are welcomed.

Donovan Innocent of Fraud Charges : Ex-Labor Secretary, 7 Others Cleared of All Counts Based on Subway Deal

Donovan stood with arms folded as the jury’s foreman read the verdict. As he was proclaimed not guilty on the first and most serious count of grand larceny, the former seminarian made the sign of the cross.

------------

The 137-count state indictment, filed Sept. 24, 1984, concerned Donovan’s work as executive vice president and part owner of the Schiavone Construction Co. of Secaucus, N. J., before he joined the Reagan Administration in 1981.

AGAIN, THE MEDIA AND THE LIBTARDOS (READ ON)

“Which office do I go to get my reputation back?”

It was a damning question, put to the media in 1987 by Raymond Donovan, the former Secretary of Labor who was indicted on corruption charges for his work with a construction company accused of having mob ties. The media had a field day with Donovan. After all, it wasn’t every day you could paint a Reagan cabinet member as a mafia stooge.

Trouble was, the charges against Donovan didn’t hold up. Not only that, Donovan’s attorneys actually never put up a defense. They rested their case without calling a single witness, saying the prosecution failed to prove Donovan did anything wrong. The jury agreed, and Donovan walked out a free man.

Donovan was free, but tainted. Hence his now-famous comment.
