Garage Sales and THE MASK

The environment around here has changed dramatically. On Friday, my wife and I saw a yard sale being set up so we stopped, unsure whether it was active. As I approached, I remembered my mask and started to put it on. A man at the sale called out, "You don't have to wear that if you don't want to!" so I put it away.

Saturday, we headed to a rummage sale in Vermont. On the way, we stopped at several sales, none of which had anyone wearing a mask.

At the rummage sale, a small sale being held in the parking lot of a church, it was the same. However, as I wended my way past the tables and reached the halfway point, I encountered three older women talking about vaccines. I was able to hear a good amount of their conversation - I couldn't help but hear it, really. I had the sense that I was meant to hear it. What they said was that none of their customers were wearing masks but that only 60 or 70% of the population is vaccinated. Another said, 'Maybe we should require that they wear "the band" if they're vaccinated so we'll know.' The first said, "Oh, but the ones who aren't will just lie."

Nice to know what the parishioners at this church think of others, eh?

I didn't know what "the band" they referred to was, but I noticed that a woman at a different table had a rubber band (blue, I think) around her wrist and figured out pretty quickly what "the band" was. Is it "a thing" in other places too??

I was tempted to chime in on their conversation but didn't. For one, the conversation wasn't ostensibly meant for me - although I was near enough and they were loud enough that they had to know I could hear it. For another, I was outnumbered and didn't think that a discussion on the risks associated with taking an inadequately tested medication with a bunch of old women who'd obviously already had it was worth my time. It was annoying, though, having to listen to a flock of judgmental, church liberals clucking about their vaccine superiority when I would bet my right arm that I know ten times more about what they've done to their bodies and the possible risks than they do.

The rest of the Garage Saleing day, there were VERY few masks. Most stores haven't changed their policies yet, but THE PEOPLE have obviously decided that it's time to put the masks away.
