Owls remind me of a time back in the late 1980's when I was doing volunteer work at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. There was a group of us and our job that day was to pull out the wood shavings from wood duck nesting boxes and replace them with clean shavings.

One of the guys went up the ladder to start scooping the old stuff out, and promptly came right back down and ladder and told our fearless leader, her name was Donna and she was a member of the Back bay staff, that there was something in the box. So she went up the ladder and fished out a little gray screech owl. We oohed and ahhed at him and eventually released him to go about his business. (Actually he got tired of being mauled by us, made his escape, and flew across this pond to a box we had already cleaned out.)

Later on I was up the ladder and found another one. I carefully lifted him out and came back down the ladder with him. I held him such that he could tuck his head under my thumb and he (apparently) was napping in the palm of my hand. (I was wearing leather gloves.) I let the other guys clean out the box then I carefully put him back in the box.

It was a good day for me.
Zim.

Re: “I kid you not ,it was a 3 foot tall white owl.that thing was huge. I turned around and he just looked at me. A few moments later he just gracefully flew off..”
Yeah, yeah, and that was a 50 lb bobcat I spotted yesterday!
