It explains that if a population of 100,000 is inoculated and the vaccine is 95% effective at preventing infection, 5,000 people will not be protected from infection. If there is a general 1% infection rate, then 50 people out of the original 100,000 can be expected to get infected (versus 1,000 if no vaccine had been given.) Here's a chart from May 18, 2021 comparing Pfizer, Moderna and Janssen / J&J. I've circled the important part. Novavax has made a comparable claim.

Can you explain this statement?
"The shots are roughly 95% effective at preventing Covid-19 infection."

Seems simple enough yet I am under the impression (perhaps mistakenly) the 95% number was in relation to being hospitalized from covid symptoms.

This is an excerpt from an article in the Lancet entitled 'What does 95% COVID-19 vaccine efficacy really mean?: "It does not mean that 95% of people are protected from disease with the vaccine—a general misconception of vaccine protection......."
