But the bigger thing is this.

Trump showed that as president, he could be as wicked as he wished and there was no way to hold him to account.

It's no use the Manhattan DA seeming tough after he's stepped down. The next guy like him won't step down.

The US desperately needs an independent system of trust. If you don't have a body that stands up for the system itself that is independent of the people operating it and the politicians, you are so vulnerable.

That's not to say that the constitution is working well. Because it isn't. You can't even get congress to agree to investigate an insurrection. That's what I'd expect to see in a corrupt, third world country. Fat chance of developing protections around your democracy and the rule of law.

I've said it for years. If you can't fix what's broken, y'all would be better off splitting into smaller countries so you can wipe slates clean and start again.

BREAKING NEWS

The Manhattan district attorney’s office is said to have told Donald Trump’s lawyers it is considering criminal charges against his family business.
Friday, June 25, 2021 1:01 PM EST

The charges against the Trump Organization would be in connection with fringe benefits the company awarded a top executive, according to several people with knowledge of the matter.

If the case moves ahead, the district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., could announce charges against the Trump Organization and its chief financial officer, Allen H. Weisselberg, as soon as next week, the people said.
